Your question
Q: What are the pros and cons of Tiffs compared to other softwares?
A:
We would say the biggest difference between Tiffs and other softwares is its unique ability to automatically filter point cloud, produce DEM and extract object (such as trees and building) information. If you have tried other softwares, you will realize that many of them are weak in filtering lidar point cloud into ground and non-ground returns, widely considered as the most crucial and time-consuming task in lidar data processing. With its leading technology, Tiffs makes filtering easy and enjoyable because it can generate DEM at ultra fast speed, high automation and accuracy. Tiffs also has the unique capability in object recognition (such as tree isolation, building identification). Tiffs is relatively weak in visualizing point cloud. Fortunately, there are many free softwares (such as LASEdit) to do that.
Q: Many softwares can generate DEM from point cloud...why is Tiffs better?
A:
Indeed, many softwares have the function of interpolating point cloud to grids. However, you cannot simply use the raw data to do that.
One common mistake in the use of lidar data is that people use the last returns to generate DEM without filtering
.This is wrong because last return could be way above the ground if the laser pulse cannot penetrate canopy. The proper way is to first classify point cloud into ground returns and non-ground returns and then use the ground returns to generate a DEM. However, to automate the classification of point cloud into ground- and non-ground returns (also called filtering) is extremely challenging and not so many softwares can do that. Tiffs, with no doubt, has the leading technology in filtering because it is FAST, ACCURATE, and AUTOMATIC.
Q: Why is filtering so important?
A:
Without properly filtering the lidar point cloud, you cannot generate an accurate DEM, you cannot properly identify objects, you cannot get the correct tree height and building height, ... Then, why do you spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to purchase the data? To just make a nice presentation?
Q: I have a file > 4Gb... Can Tiffs process such a large file?
A:
Tiffs uses a divide-and-conquer strategy to deal with large files. First of all, if a file is very large, you can break it into small files when you import it no matter what size it has. Second, in the tiling window, you can reorganize the data into tiles by dumping all the lidar files covering your study area. If your computer does not have enough memory, you can set a relatively small tile size, and vice versa. In such a way, Tiffs can handle lidar files of any size on computers with any memory, theoretically. However, it is recommended to have 2Gb memory or more to have the best performance.
Q: How can I purchase Tiffs?
A:
The purchase of Tiffs is as easy as online shopping. We have different prices for academic, governmental, and commercial licenses. Please let us know what kind of license you want to buy. Usually, Globalidar will send you the software CD and dongle at the same day of the receipt of your electronic payment (by credit card/debit card/paypal) and we are committed to mail the package to you within three days.
